Review: Grid Index

Carsten Nicolai heeft van uitgeverij Gestalten de kans gekregen om zijn gezonde obsessie met grids te vereeuwigen in boekvorm. Zijn nieuwste boek Grid Index is voor grids wat NeubauWelt voor vector pictogrammen was. Zo'n boek dat elke ontwerpstudio in de boekenkast gaat hebben.

Een grid of een structuur, waarbij horizontale en verticale lijnen elkaar snijden, blijft een super effectieve manier om informatie te structureren. De logica en toepassing van grids zijn, ondanks hun lange historie vandaag de dag nog steeds relevant, getuige de grote hoeveelheid posters en websites die er gebruik van maken om hun content te structureren.

Over het fenomeen is al veel geschreven. Naast de oranje bijbel van Josef Müller-Brockmann ligt het internet met goede voorbeelden bezaaid. Kijk maar op The Grid System voor een overzicht van honderden boeken/websites volledig gewijd aan grids.

Grid Index

Carsten Nicolai, auteur van Gestalten’s nieuwste Grid Index, mistte echter een goed overzicht van de soorten grids, in tegenstelling tot de toepassing ervan. Zelf omschrijft Carsten Grid Index dan ook als een referentieboek. Een boek voor: “designers, visual artists, architects, researchers, mathemeticians or anyone else with an interest in basic structures of the visual world”.

Ik moest gelijk denken aan de classic van Stefan Gandl, NeubauWelt, een ander soort encyclopedie op het gebied van hedendaagse pictogrammen.

Grid Index

Ik voorspel dat ontwerpers die geometrische ontwerpen of custom lettertypes gebaseerd op grids Grid Index zullen gaan gebruiken als inspiratie of uitgangspunt. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan opdrachten zoals de typografie voor die brug van de provincie Friesland, ontworpen door Thonik.

Grid Index

Bijgevoegd zit een DVD met alle grids in .eps formaat, waardoor je meteen aan de slag kunt. Zie het dan ook niet als een leesboek, maar meer als een boek dat gelijk de kast in kan tot het moment dat een ontwerpopdracht om een grid aanpak smeekt.

As with Neubau Welt, all of the work shown in the book “Neubau Modul” can also be found as Adobe Illustrator and bitmap files on an included DVD that can be used on any platform.The DVD also contains the entire digital collection of patterns as a practical Swatch Library, enabling designers to immediately put them to use in any project in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. The Swatch Library makes it especially easy for designers to combine and edit the examples and to create new, completely scalable patterns within seconds. As an added bonus, the DVD contains a headline font designed by Neubau.

The book also provides the user with an analogue instrument for making the best selection of patterns as efficiently as possible. With the included Modulmeter one can test combinations of patterns directly on the page. “Neubau Modul” is a practical tool that makes designers’ every day work a bit easier.
